Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact
Wakatobi National Park is a global treasure, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at the epicenter of marine biodiversity. At Wakatobi Liveaboard Voyages, we view ourselves not as tour operators, but as custodians of this fragile paradise. Our license to operate is a privilege that comes with a profound responsibility to protect the environment and empower the local communities who call this region home. Our sustainability policy is not a marketing initiative; it is a core operational principle integrated into every aspect of our business.
Environmental Stewardship
Our commitment to protecting the marine ecosystem is uncompromising. We implement and enforce the following policies across our entire portfolio of Wakatobi liveaboards:
- Strict No Single-Use Plastic Policy: All our partner vessels are contractually obligated to be free of single-use plastic bottles, straws, and bags. Guests are provided with reusable water bottles and amenities are supplied in refillable, biodegradable containers.
- Advanced Waste Management: We mandate that all vessels use advanced wastewater treatment systems. All solid waste is meticulously sorted and transported back to the mainland for proper disposal, never discarded at sea or on local islands.
- Reef-Safe Practices: We provide complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to all guests and strictly enforce a no-touch, no-take, no-chase policy for all marine life interactions. Our dive briefings, guided by our fact-based standards, extensively cover buoyancy control and responsible underwater photography.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We partner with a verified Indonesian reforestation project in Kalimantan to offer our clients the ability to offset the carbon footprint of their international and domestic flights. Juara Holding Group offsets 100% of the carbon emissions from our own operational staff travel.
Community Empowerment
We believe that sustainable tourism must directly benefit the local population. Our goal is to create a positive economic and social impact that fosters local support for conservation.
- Local Employment: We have a ‘Wakatobi First’ hiring policy. We contractually require our vessel partners to maintain a minimum of 75% of their crew positions for residents of Southeast Sulawesi, with a preference for those from the Wakatobi regency. We invest in training programs to help local staff advance into more senior roles.
- Supporting Local Enterprises: We source fresh produce, fish, and supplies from local markets in Wangi-Wangi and other islands whenever possible, ensuring that tourism revenue flows directly into the local economy. We also facilitate visits for our guests to support local artisans, such as the traditional weavers in the village of Pajam.
- Community Development Fund: A portion of every booking is contributed to our Community Development Fund, managed by the Juara Holding Group. This fund supports educational initiatives in local schools on Kaledupa island and contributes to the maintenance of mooring buoys managed by the Wakatobi National Park Authority, reducing anchor damage to reefs.
Partnerships for Preservation
We cannot achieve our goals alone. We actively collaborate with key organizations to amplify our impact.
- Wakatobi National Park Authority (Balai Taman Nasional Wakatobi): We maintain a transparent and collaborative relationship, providing feedback from our guides to assist in park management and ensuring 100% of park entrance fees are collected and remitted.
- The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Indonesia: We support TNC’s scientific research and community-based conservation programs in the region, which have been instrumental in establishing the park’s zoning and protection policies.
Choosing Wakatobi Liveaboard Voyages means choosing a partner who is as invested in the future of Wakatobi as you are in experiencing it. It is a choice for luxury that leaves a positive legacy.
