Wakatobi Liveaboard FAQ — The Atelier Answers Honest Questions

Eight years of running wakatobi liveaboard charters from the Wanci operations desk has produced a recurring set of questions from prospective guests. We have collected the most-asked sixteen here and answered them with full operational candour. If your specific question is not on this page, message the atelier directly on WhatsApp at +62 811 3941 4563 or email bd@juaraholding.com.

Pricing and What It Actually Includes

What is the actual all-in price for a 7-day Wakatobi liveaboard?

A seven-day Wakatobi liveaboard charter on our Atelier Standard tier starts at US$2,890 per diver. The Atelier Premium tier with private cabin starts at US$3,690. The Atelier Luxury tier on a 42-metre purpose-built dive yacht starts at US$4,290. The Atelier Signature tier on the 53-metre flagship platform starts at US$5,890. These figures include seven nights aboard, twenty-two to twenty-four guided dives, all tanks and weights, full board with chef-prepared meals, certified divemaster guides, harbour fees, and the Wakatobi Marine National Park entry permit. The full pricing structure is documented on our Wakatobi liveaboard cost 2026 pricing guide.

Are there any hidden fees once I am aboard?

No. The price you sign at deposit is the price at the dock. The only items not included are alcohol beyond the welcome cocktail, dive equipment rental if you do not bring your own kit (US$35 per day), the Nitrox surcharge on Standard and Premium tiers (US$15 per dive; included on Luxury and Signature), and crew gratuity which we leave to your discretion. The Wanci airport tax of Rp 50,000 (roughly US$3) is also not included and is paid at airport arrival.

What is the deposit and cancellation policy?

A thirty-percent deposit secures your charter date. The balance is due sixty days before embarkation. Cancellation more than ninety days out: full refund minus US$120 bank-handling fee. Cancellation between ninety and sixty days: rescheduled to any date within twenty-four months, no fee. Cancellation inside sixty days: rescheduled to any date within twelve months, no fee. Force-majeure cancellation (weather, harbour-master closure, government restriction, volcanic activity at Mount Una-Una) is always full reschedule, no fee.

Diving, Certification, and Sea Conditions

What certification do I need to dive Wakatobi?

PADI Open Water (or equivalent SSI, NAUI, BSAC, CMAS certification) is the absolute minimum for the seven-day classic charter. PADI Advanced Open Water with at least fifty logged dives is strongly recommended for the ten-day extension that includes the Binongko walls, where the deeper sites and the stronger southern currents reward dive experience. Nitrox certification is recommended for the Luxury and Signature tiers where Nitrox is included in the headline price. The complete requirement set is on our 7-day charter master page.

How strong are the currents at Wakatobi?

Wakatobi currents are gentler than Raja Ampat but stronger than Bali. Most Tomia walls run at half-knot to one-knot drift, suitable for Open Water divers with modest current experience. The Binongko sites can run one-and-a-half to two knots on tide changes, which is why we recommend Advanced certification for the ten-day extension. Our divemaster guides brief every dive with explicit current direction and exit-point planning.

How many dives per day on the standard charter?

Three to four dives per day on the diving days. Morning dive at 07:30, second dive at 11:00, third dive at 15:00, optional night dive at 19:30 on three of the six diving days. Total of twenty-two dives across the seven-day classic, twenty-four across the seven-day Luxury and Signature tiers, and thirty across the ten-day extension.

Is Nitrox available?

Yes. Standard and Premium tiers offer Nitrox at a US$15 per dive surcharge with notice at booking. Luxury and Signature tiers include Nitrox in the headline charter price. All four tiers carry compatible analyser kits and run a full pre-dive analysis on every Nitrox cylinder. Rebreather support is available on the Luxury and Signature tiers with sixty days advance notice.

Travel Logistics and Booking

How do I get to Wakatobi from Bali?

The standard flight chain is Bali Denpasar (DPS) → Makassar (UPG) → Kendari (KDI) → Wanci (WNI). Total transit is one full travel day. We strongly recommend overnighting in Kendari to absorb potential delays on the single Wings Air ATR running the Kendari–Wanci leg. The complete route, carrier recommendations, and contingency planning is documented in our Wakatobi from Bali travel route guide.

How far in advance should I book?

Most Wakatobi liveaboard charters book three to nine months in advance. Peak July–August and the late-October manta window typically book six to nine months out. April and November shoulder months book three to four months ahead because returning clients have learned the value calendar. Last-minute charters within sixty days are sometimes possible on the Standard tier when other groups have rescheduled.

What is the best time of year to dive Wakatobi?

April and November are the best value (high-season conditions, shoulder-season prices). July, August, and October are peak visibility (thirty metres). October–November is best for manta photography. May, June, and September are best for first-time visitors. The complete monthly breakdown of visibility, sea temperature, manta probability, and crowd density is in our best time Wakatobi marine park monthly guide.

Wakatobi Versus Other Destinations

Wakatobi versus Raja Ampat — which should I choose?

Wakatobi wins on price (thirty percent less expensive), accessibility from Bali (one travel day versus one-and-a-half), crowding (one-third the boat density), and gentler currents. Raja Ampat wins on pelagic action, on macro density at Misool, and on logistics infrastructure (the Sorong recompression chamber). We recommend Wakatobi for first-time Coral Triangle divers and for couples; Raja Ampat for experienced pelagic photographers. Most repeat clients dive both in alternating years. The full comparison is in our Wakatobi vs Raja Ampat honest comparison.

What about the Wakatobi Resort and the Pelagian liveaboard?

Wakatobi Resort on Tolandono island operates the Pelagian dive yacht, and we will say plainly that Pelagian is an excellent product for guests staying at the resort. We are an independent curator working with seven other Indonesian-flagged liveaboards at meaningfully different price points. If you want the resort-tied Pelagian product, we will introduce you to the resort directly. If you want the broader liveaboard market with seven boats and four price tiers, that is what we curate.

On-Board Life and Equipment

What are the cabins like?

Cabin specification scales by tier. Atelier Standard runs shared en-suite cabins with twin beds, mechanical ventilation, and porthole windows. Atelier Premium runs private en-suite cabins with double or twin configuration, air-conditioning, and porthole or scuttle windows. Atelier Luxury runs premium private suites with double bed, air-conditioning, and panoramic windows. Atelier Signature runs premium suites with private balcony, king bed, air-conditioning, and full ocean-view picture windows.

What is the food like?

Full board with chef-prepared meals. The Standard tier runs an Indonesian rumah-makan menu with seafood emphasis, three meals plus afternoon snack daily. The Premium tier adds Western breakfast options and a sashimi night. The Luxury and Signature tiers run a full international rotation including Italian, Japanese, and chef-tasting dinners with optional pairing wine. Vegetarian, halal, kosher, gluten-free, and child-specific menus are accommodated with seven days advance notice at deposit.

Do I need to bring my own dive equipment?

Bring your own regulator and dive computer if at all possible — these are personal-fit items and rental quality varies. BCD, wetsuit, mask, fins, and tanks are provided as rental at US$35 per day for full kit (or roughly US$245 across the seven-day charter). The Atelier Luxury and Signature tiers include rental gear in the headline price.

Is travel insurance required?

Effectively yes. We require Diver Alert Network (DAN) coverage or equivalent dive-specific insurance for every diver — this covers the recompression-chamber evacuation contingency. We strongly recommend trip-cancellation insurance covering the charter deposit and flight costs. Combined cost is roughly US$225 to US$445 per diver depending on coverage limits. Travel medicine guidance is available from the International Travel Safety Medical Foundation.
