Our Liveaboard Evaluation Methodology

The term ‘luxury’ is subjective. At Wakatobi Liveaboard Voyages, we make it objective. Our reputation rests on the quality of the vessels we recommend, which is why we have developed a comprehensive, data-driven methodology for evaluating every potential partner. Only a small fraction of operators in the region meet our stringent criteria. This page outlines the rigorous process each Wakatobi liveaboard must pass to be included in our curated portfolio. Our commitment to this process is overseen by our leadership team and is the foundation of our client promise.

The Annual On-Site Audit

Our evaluation is not based on brochures or second-hand reports. A senior member of our team, typically our Head of Maritime Operations or Founder, conducts a mandatory, in-person, multi-day audit of every vessel on an annual basis. This physical inspection is the cornerstone of our methodology and allows us to verify every detail, from the engine room’s cleanliness to the quality of the bed linens.

Our 5-Pillar Scoring Rubric

Each vessel is scored across five critical pillars. A vessel must achieve a minimum score of 90/100 to be considered for partnership.

1. Maritime Safety & Compliance (30 points)

This is our most heavily weighted and non-negotiable pillar. We verify:

  • Vessel Certification: Valid Surat Ukur (Tonnage Certificate) and Surat Laut/Pas Besar (Seaworthiness Certificate) issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (Kementerian Perhubungan).
  • Safety Equipment: Full compliance with SOLAS standards, including inspection dates for life rafts, fire extinguishers, and EPIRB. We physically check for modern navigation systems (Radar, GPS, AIS), satellite phones, and comprehensive first aid and oxygen kits.
  • Crew Credentials: Captain must hold a valid ANT I/II license. All crew must have STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) basic safety training and be covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (national social security).
  • Maintenance Records: We review detailed logs for engine, generator, and compressor maintenance.

2. Crew Expertise & Service (25 points)

A beautiful boat is nothing without an exceptional crew. We evaluate:

  • Dive Team: Lead guides must be, at minimum, PADI Divemasters or SSI Dive Guides with 500+ dives in Wakatobi specifically. We prioritize operators with Instructors on board. We assess their briefing quality, in-water management, and knowledge of marine life.
  • Hospitality Staff: We observe the service standards of the stewards and chef. We look for proactive, intuitive service that anticipates guest needs, a hallmark of true luxury.
  • Local Knowledge: The captain and crew’s familiarity with Wakatobi’s specific currents, weather patterns, and secret moorings is critical.

3. Vessel Comfort & Amenities (20 points)

We cater to a discerning clientele and expect amenities to match.

  • Cabin Quality: We inspect cabin size, air conditioning effectiveness, en-suite bathroom quality, mattress and linen comfort, and storage space.
  • Common Areas: We assess the comfort and design of the salon, sundecks, and dining areas. A dedicated camera room or station is a significant plus.
  • Food & Beverage: We evaluate the quality of the cuisine, the variety of the menu, and the ability to cater to complex dietary requirements.

4. Sustainability & Environmental Practices (15 points)

We are stewards of this pristine environment. We mandate:

  • Waste Management: Strict protocols for waste separation and disposal on the mainland, not in the park. No single-use plastics provided to guests.
  • Reef-Safe Policies: Use of reef-safe sunscreens, mandatory pre-dive briefings on buoyancy control and no-touch policies.
  • Community Engagement: We favor operators who actively hire from local Wakatobi communities and contribute to local conservation or education initiatives.

5. Guest Feedback & Reputation (10 points)

While our own audit is primary, we also analyze the vessel’s track record.

  • Direct Feedback Loop: We collect detailed feedback from every client we place on a vessel.
  • Industry Reputation: We consult our network of travel professionals and local guides to gauge the operator’s reputation for reliability and ethics.

This exhaustive methodology ensures that when we recommend a liveaboard, we are not just making a suggestion; we are staking our reputation on its proven excellence. Our editorial content is a direct reflection of these findings.
